Nova Scotia Film Safety Society
While working for Barry Cowling at Citadel Films, I was asked to create a logo for a not-for-profit he initiated. Early in my career, projects that felt fulfilling were those that served a purpose beyond consumerism fulfilling. Nova Scotia’s film industry in the 1990s flourished. Films like Delores Claibourne, The Scarlet Letter, Two if By Sea, Simon Birch, Titanic and countless other big- and low-budget productions came to Nova Scotia and the region for locations and crew. The industry, however, saw an issue: on-set injuries. As a result, the Nova Scotia Film Safety Society (NSFSS) was started and donated medical and safety supplies to low-budget film and video production companies, identified with NSFSS stickers. The logo represents the confluence of a utility knife, bandaid, and film strip. To this day, I respect this experience as a focal point early on in my career: one’s work can be used for products that help others.
