Applied Arts feature—Fort Needham Memorial Park

A tribute to 100th Anniversary of the Halifax Explosion

For the 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion, the Halifax Regional Municipality planned for a permanent commemorative project at Fort Needham Memorial Park, the city’s green space dedicated to the explosion victims. Together, Ekistics and Form:Media (now Fathom Studio) created a landscape architecture project with experiential design elements atop Fort Needham’s hill. In this editorial feature, Nickie Shobeiry looks at the work done to commemorate the disaster and tell the story of the explosion, published on December 6, 2017, the 100th Anniversary of the Halifax Explosion.

To tell a tragic story through the landscape and design, John deWolf of Form:Media (now Fathom Studio) guided the interpretive plan and experiential design elements, working together with Ekistics Planning & Design’s Sandara Cooke.
